Marine Life in Norway - 2005

On September 30, 2005,  Norway Post  have continued to issue the marine life stamp series in two single stamps. The species of marine life that featured on stamps are Orcinus Ocra (Killer whale) and Urticina eques  (Sea anemone).

 

Orcinus Ocra

The killer whale (Orcinus orca) distinctively bears a black back, white chest and sides, and a white patch above and behind the eye. Calves are born with a yellowish or orange tint, which fades to white.

Males and females also have different patterns of back and white skin in their genital areas.Sexual dimorphism is also apparent in the skull; adult males have longer lower jaws than females, and have larger occipital crests.

Sea Anemones - Flowers of the Sea

 

On February 20, 2012,  Faroe Islands Post issued the stamp set feature Sea Anemone , Flower of the sea. The issues consist of 4 postage stamps depicted colorful sea anemone and designed by Ingi Sørensen . Sea anemone are related to jellyfish and corals, all of which have a relatively simple circular body shape with numerous tentacles surrounding a mouth at one end of the organism

Marine biologists consider difficult to determine the species of sea anemones. Conservation of this animal group requires special methods and specialist knowledge is required to ensure correct identification. Although the sea anemone fauna in the Faroese area is not yet completely documented, Thirty species of sea anemone have been identified in the Faroes, but the total number of species is presumably higher.

Since the anemone lacks a skeleton, the contractile cells pull against the gastrovascular cavity, which acts as a hydrostatic skeleton. The anemone stabilizes itself by shutting its mouth, which keeps the gastrovascular cavity at a constant volume, making it more rigid.

Marine Life – Montserrat 2010

On February 12, 2010, Montserrat Post has issued the marine life stamp series that features the Basket stars, Sea Anemone, Spiny Lobsters, and Spotted Drum. Each of issue stamps have different nominal value,  $ 1.10, $ 2.25, $ 2.50, $2.75 and $ 5.0.

Basket Star – $ 1.10

 

The Basket  stars  are  a group of brittle stars and has characteristic many-branched arms. Their habitat  are deep sea with the life span  is up to 35 years in the wild. They weigh around  5 kg. Like other echinoderms, basket stars lack blood and achieve gas exchange via their water vascular system.The basket stars are the largest ophiuroids with Gorgonocephalus stimpsoni measuring up to 70 cm in arm length with a disk diameter of 14 cm.
