Rose on Thailand’s Stamp - 2010

The Communications Authority of Thailand issued  stamp  features  rose flower on February 5, 2010. The issue stamp only one postage stamp which depicts a red rose . A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of erect shrubs, and climbing or trailing plants, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles.

The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, which usually has only four. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red.Roses are insect-pollinated in nature.

While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called "thorns", they are technically prickles — outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem).Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it.

Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and fragrance. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.

Home-grown Vegetables of Thailand

 

 

The Communications Authority of Thailand has issued the stamp series feature the Home-grown Vegetable  such as: Lime, Tomato, Pumpkin and Bottle gourd on January 15, 2011.The issue stamps consist of 4 postage stamps with different nominal value.

 

 

Lime is a term referring to a number of different citrus fruits, both species and hybrids, which are typically round, green to yellow in color, 3–6 cm in diameter, and containing sour and acidic pulp.

Limes are a good source of vitamin C. Limes are often used to accent the flavors of foods and beverages. Limes are grown all year round and are usually smaller and more sour than lemons.Lime contains 24 milligrams less vitamin C per 100 grams than the lemon.

Lime is valued both for the acidity of its juice and the floral aroma of its zest. It is a very common ingredient in authentic Mexican, Southwestern United States, Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Lime leaves are also used as  an herb in South, East, and Southeast Asia. Lime is frequently used to add flavor to cold and hot drinks, including water, tonic and other cocktails.

Fighting Fish of Thailand.

Thailand Post has been issued fighting  fish stamp set, depicted betta imbellis, and betta splendens.
They called as fighting fish because was collected for game of fish fighting. Beside as fighting fish they also collected as beauty fish in the fresh water aquarium.

Betta imbellis, also known as the Crescent Betta or Peacefull betta is a freshwater ray-finned fish in the gourami family. This species is native to Malaysia and Indonesia. The left side of above picture shown betta imbellis fish, meanwhile the right side shown betta splendens fish.

Betta splendens, also known as the betta is a popular species of freshwater aquarium fish. It usually grows to an overall length of about 6.0 centimetres, though some varieties reach 8.0 centimetres in length. On average, males are more aggressive. Siamese fighting fish will even respond aggressively to their own reflections in a mirror; use of a mirror avoids the risk of physical damage inherent in actual conflict, although it can lead to stress in some individuals.Siamese fighting fish has upturned mouths and is primarily carnivorous surface feeders. In the wild, they feed on zooplankton and the larvae of mosquitoes and other insects, such as flies, crickets, or grasshoppers.

Betta splendens

This species have affectionately nicknamed "The Jewel of the Orient" due to their beauty and wide range of colours which are produced through selective breeding. Wild fish only exhibit strong colours when agitated. However, breeders have been able to make this coloration permanent, and a wide variety of hues breed true.
The fish is a member of the gourami family (family Osphronemiae) of order Perciformes. The name of the genus is derived from ikan bettah, taken from a local dialect of Thailand. The wild ancestors of this fish are native to the rice paddies of Thailand and Cambodia and are called Siamese fighting fish.
