Tornjak - Bosnian Herzegovinian Croatian shepherd dog

Bosnia  & Herzegovina  Croatian Post Mostar  issued stamp set composed  of 4 postage stamps, features the endemic species of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia, Tornjak on February 22, 2007.

The Tornjak is a mountain sheep dog native to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia and is a very healthy breed. They  do not need so much proteins in the food. For feeding Tornjaks a low protein diet is suitable. Too high a protein content can lead to the development of coat problems.

Tornjaks are large and powerful dogs, with well proportioned, almost square bodied features and agile movements. The bodies of these dogs are strong and well built, with harmonious and dignified movements. They have long and thick double coat which a thick undercoat for  adequately protects  against poor weather conditions. The dogs typically possess shaggy tails, kept high like a flag.

On September 22, 2003 , Belarus Post issued the breed of dog series stamps features Golden Retriever, German Mastiff, and German Sheepdog.The issuance presented in one set of three stamps, sheetlet and FDC (First Day Cover).

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a breed of dog. This dog has a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth. The outer coat is sleek and water repellent, and lays flat against the body. The official colour of the breed is the varying shades of gold that are most often seen.

The Golden Retriever suit well for a variety of roles including guide dog for the blind, hearing dog for deaf people, hunting dog, illegal drug detector, and search and rescue participant. Because of their loyal and gentle temperament, golden retrievers are also popular family pets.

Some variations do exist between the British type Golden Retrievers prevalent throughout Europe and Australia,and those of American lines.The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident".They are not "one man dogs" and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them.

German Mastiff

German Mastiff or The Great Dane also known as Danish Hound is a breed of domestic dog known for its giant size.The breed is commonly referred to as the "Apollo of all breeds". The Great Dane is one of the world's tallest dog breeds, they're sometimes called "The World's Largest Lap Dog".

Breed clubs health surveys in the UK and US put the average life span of Great Danes at 6.5 to 7 years.

The German Mastiff's large and imposing appearance belies its friendly nature; the breed is often referred to as a gentle giant.German Mastiff are generally well-disposed toward other dogs, other non-canine pets and humans, although, when feeling threatened, have been known to attack humans. This is usually brought on by a person that is unfamiliar to the dog.

German Sheepdog is a small-sized dog, with bushy tail carried over the back, small muzzle, and shaggy coat, which is generally black or light fawn. His manner is brisk and affectionate, and his tractability is great, so that he is most useful in his vocation, and as a companionable dog is not excelled.

The sheetlet comprised of 2 set stamps and added another picture of breed dog.

Another issuance is FDC (First day Cover ) and has special post mark of dog head and feature puppy dogs.

Pet Animals on Malta’s Stamps

Pet Animals are animals kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to wild animals or to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic or productive reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. Mostly dogs have known as "therapy animals" . Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.People most commonly get pets for companionship, to protect a home or property, or because of the beauty of the animals.In many locations, animals that are considered pets by their owners but are legally classified as livestock, including horses, pigs, camelids, and fowl may be banned from being kept within the city limits or restricted to property of a certain larger size.

Regards to the human habits, Malta post has issued a miniature sheet featured the pet animals such as horse, dog, cat, fish , turtle, bird, rabbit, hamster or others mammals.

Preservation of Nature on Slovakia stamps

In relation with the Preservation of Nature , Slovakia Post issued the stamps features specific dogs on 18th of April 2007. The dogs are Slovensky čuvač and Slovensky kopov which both breed in Slovakia.The face value of stamps are same, 31 sk.The issued product of stamps are one set of 2 stamps, one souvenir sheet as shown, FDC for each single stamp.

Slovensky čuvač

Early last century the čuvač was a popular breed in Slovakia.The characteristics of this breed, a robust body and thick white coat, are similar to those of mountain dog types. Slovensky čuvač size is 62-70 cm high. Slovensky čuvač moves with ease, quickly, and likes to run. Historically the Slovensky čuvač was a valuable helper to border guards, shepherds, and cattlemen. It protected sheep pens, chalets, and farms. This wide range of skills shows its immense value and character. Slovensky čuvač is a calm sheepdog, and if bred in suitable conditions displays not only inherited skills but also new tasks

Slovensky kopov

Slovensky kopov is not very sturdy; it has a height range from 45-50 cm (40-45 cm), and typically a black coat with brown to mahogany marks. The breed is extremely fierce; therefore it is used mainly for wild boars and vermin. It has a highly developed sense of orientation Slovensky kopov follows a fresh scent unwaveringly for several hours. However, it is also good at tracing shot animals. Nevertheless, Slovensky kopov is not a kennel dog. It works best when hunting individually. Despite its typically fierce character and temperament, Slovensky kopov is a cuddly and friendly companion.Currently, the Slovensky kopov is the highest-bred hound in Slovakia. On average, 300 - 400 puppies are registered annually.

Dogs At Work.

The domestic dog has been the most widely kept working, hunting and companion animal in human history. Dogs have lived and worked with humans in so many roles such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. Therefore dogs have the unique nickname, "man's best friend”. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

Dogs of several breeds are considered as working dogs that include in human activities in terms of helping out humans. The working dogs are trained properly and accordingly to the activities they will perform. Yet, despite the size of some dogs they are sometimes used as pets as well. However, they generally require special training and owners might have to learn how to bind with their pet, in these cases.

Isle of man Post Offices issued the above stamp depicted the working dogs are Labrador, Border Collie, Dalmatian. Mongrel, English Setter and Alsatian.
