Clivia Flower Plant

Clivia nobilis is only found in the Eastern Cape Province, specifically from the Sundays River Mouth, extending up along the coast to the Mbashe River area, with colonies occurring as far inland as in the vicinity of Grahamstown, the Olifants Kop pass. 

Clivia nobilis is found under evergreen forest, low bush (thicket) and amongst dune vegetation. The inland populations are found in wooded kloofs where they grow on riverbanks, rocky outcrops and along forest margins. 

 

The populations growing primary in coastal dune vegetation and sand are normally more exposed, with the plants near the top of dunes grow in full sunlight.

The inflorescence consists of an umbel of 20-60 florets borne on a peduncle about 300 mm long The florets are pinkish yellow to dark red with green tips . They are pendulous tubular, about 11 mm wide and 25 - 40 mm long.

 

 

South Africa Post proud to released  a miniature sheet consist of six stamps feature the Clivia Flower Plant,  which are found in South Africa, on August 8, 2006.  The sheet depict Clivia miniata, Clivia gardenii, Clivia nobilis, Clivia  robusta , Clavia Mirabilis and Clivia  caulescens .

Clavia miniata, Clavia gardenii, Clavia robusta and Clavia caulescens seedlings flower after four to five years. Clavia nobilis will flower after seven or eight years. It is reported that Clavia mirabilis also takes about 6 years to flower.

 

Unique flowers of Malaysia

Malaysia Post pleased to launch a set of four stamps feature the unique flowers on October 9, 2008.

The issue stamps depicts the unique flowers of Malaysia, Kembang Songsang or Gloriosa superba, Goniothalamus tapis  or Kenerak, Quisqualis indica  or Akar dani,  Michelia figo or Cempaka Pisang.

Kembang Songsang or Gloriosa superba is A scandent plant, climbing by leaftip tendrils. The perianth segments, which are accrescent during anthesis and become reflexed, are striking in color, yellow proximally and at margins and dark red in the median portion.

Gloriosa superba is the national flower of Zimbabwe and it is also the state flower of Tamil Nadu state in India, and was the national flower of Tamil Eelam. This is a species of the genus Gloriosa.

Gloriosa is a genus of ten species in the plant family Colchicaceae.They are native in tropical and southern Africa to Asia. They are tender, tuberous rooted deciduous perennials, adapted to summer rainfall with a dormant dry season.

Popular Flower on Stamps – Rose

On March 25, 2011, to mark the coming of the spring, Latvia Post has released a new stamp in the Popular Flowers series - the Rose designed artist Lilija Dinere. The flower motif in stamps is very popular among clients, ”Rose is a very beautiful, bright, summery stamp “. Therefore  Latvia Post has chosen, Rose as part of  a special series dedicated to popular flowers.

A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles.

Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds.

Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant.

Flower Growing - Beauty of Orchids

Orchids are easily distinguished from other plants, as they share some very evident apomorphies. Among these are: bilateral symmetry (zygomorphism), many resupinate flowers, a nearly always highly modified petal (labellum), fused stamens and carpels, and extremely small seeds.

All orchids are perennial herbs, lack any permanent woody structure, and can grow in monopodial and sympodial patterns.

The world's richest concentration of orchid varieties is found in the tropics, mostly Asia, South America and Central America.

To dedicated the beauty of orchids, Czech  Post  pleased to launch a set of four stamps which composed in one beautiful miniature sheet.

 

The species depicted on stamps  are Dendrobium peguanum, Stanhopea tigrina, Cattleya aclandiae and Paphiopedilum charlesworthii.

Popular Flower on Stamps – Peony

On March 26, 2010, Latvia Post  pleased to issue one stamp depicts Peony flower as part of their programs featuring the popular flower on stamps.  Peonies are  native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America. Each flower type becomes more complex in its arrangement of petals.

Peonies are also extensively grown as ornamental plants for their very large, often scented flowers. Peonies tend to attract ants to the flower buds. This is due to the nectar that forms on the outside of the flower buds, and is not required for the plants' own pollination or other growth.

Hidden Beauties of Larch Flower

Service des Postes de Saint Pierre et Miquelon launched  one stamp features the hidden beauty of  Flower on February 9, 2011. This stamp depicts Larch flower with face value of  1.05 Euro.

Larches are conifers in the genus Larix, in the family Pinaceae. Growing from 20 to 45 m tall, they are native to much of the cooler temperate northern hemisphere, on lowlands in the north and high on mountains further south. Larch are among the dominant plants in the immense boreal forests of Russia and Canada.

'Vanuatu Colours of Bloom'

On December 7, 2011, Vanuatu Post launched the 'Vanuatu Colours of Bloom' stamp issue which portrays the vibrant flowers found all over Vanuatu. These are typically characterized by having green flower clusters. It is the vibrancy of the splendid blooms which are found all over Vanuatu and their colours stand out, both in the Port Vila market and in other markets and gardens throughout the islands.  Vanuatu Post has chosen Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) to join three Heliconias - Heliconia psittacorum, Heliconia rostrata and Heliconia caribaea var in this colourful stamp issue.

Heliconia psittacorum  or known as Parrot's  beak, False Bird-Of-Paradise is a perennial herb native to the Caribbean and northern South America. Heliconia psittacorum flowers are actually highly modified leaves and bracts growing up to no more than four feet tall.

The parrot's beaks are exotic, abundantly bloomers all year long. The flower, or inflorescence of the Heliconia stays almost constant, and may last from several days to several months.

Heliconias like places with a lot of water, rich soil, and sunlight. Heliconia psittacorum does not mind cool temperatures, but does best in warm, humid areas. It is often cultivated as a tropical ornamental plant.

Flora Fauna of Burundi

Burundi Post released the stamp set features the flora fauna of their country on December 24, 2008. The species have depicted on the five postage stamps are Erythrina, Maracuja, Werner, Heron, and Royal Eagle.

The 90F stamp   represented a Erythrina flower. Erythrina  is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae. It contains about 130 species, which are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Erythrina is tree that can  growing up to 30 m  in height. Many species of Erythrina have bright red flowers, and this may be the origin of the common name.

Not all species of Erythrina have bright red flowers.Many birds visit the nectar-rich Erythrina flowers. Erythrina leaves are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the swift moth Endoclita damor and the woolly bears Hypercompe eridanus and Hypercompe icasia.

Aromatic plants – Comoros

The Post of Comoros issued the stamp series of aromatic plants on  October 9,  2003 . The issue comprises of two postage stamps depicted Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata ), and Vanille (Vanilla planifolia).

Ylang-Ylang or Cananga odorata,  kenanga (Indonesian), fragrant cananga, Macassar-oil plant  is a tree valued for its perfume. The essential oil derived from the flowers is used in aromatherapy.

Cananga  odorata is a fast-growing tree of the custard-apple family, Annonaceae and attains an average height of 12 m . It grows in full or partial sun, and prefers the acidic soils of its native rainforest habitat.

The evergreen leaves are smooth and glossy, oval, pointed, with wavy margins, and 13–20 cm  long. The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow, greenish-yellow (rarely pink) petals, rather like a sea star in appearance, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil.

Hong Kong Flowers

In year 2008, Hong Kong Post issued the specific stamp set features the flowers which available in their country. The depicted flower species are Chinese hibiscus, Tree cotton, Allamanda, Azaleas, Indian Lotus, and Morning Glory.

Chinese Hibiscus

Chinese hibiscus or Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, is an evergreen flowering shrub native to East Asia. It is widely grown as an ornamental plant throughout the tropics and subtropics. The flowers are large, generally red in the original varieties, and firm, but generally lack any scent.Chinese hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia, called Bunga Raya in Malay.

There are many varieties, cultivars, and hybrids  with flower colors ranging from white through yellow and orange to scarlet and shades of pink, with both single and double sets of petals.

The Damascus International Flower Fair - 2011

The Syrian Arab Republic General Establishment of Posts has issued the flower stamp series in related with  the Damascus International Flower Fair 2011 on June 22, 2011. The issue stamps consist of 5 single stamps depicted the well known flower such as: Nerium Oleander, Lily of the Valley, Lotus, The Bird of Paradise, and Dahlia.

Nerium Oleander

Nerium oleander is an evergreen shrub or small tree, as  the only species currently classified in the genus Nerium of the  family Apocynaceae. This small tree have  toxic in all its parts. It is so widely cultivated that no precise region of origin has been identified, though southwest Asia has been suggested. Nerium Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants.

Argentina’s Native Orchids

Argentina Post (Correo Oficial de la Republica Argentina SA) has issued the flower stamp series depicted their native orchids on 24 September 2011. The issue stamps comprised of two stamps, featured native orchid  , Sacoila lanceolata and Zygopetalum maxillare Lodd. ( The Chin-Bone Zygopetalum).

 
 

Sacoila lanceolata

Sacoila lanceolata is orchid as member of family Orchidaceae belonging to the subfamily Orchidoideae. Plants are distributed from Florida, USA through Central America to South America. Plants are terrestrial and blooms with many flowers which have a short column. Plant blooms from spring to fall with many 2.3 cm wide flowers.

Flowers of Aruba - 2011

Aruba Post have issued the stamp set features flowers which are known well in many countries  in year 2011. The issue stamps are depicted many species of flower  i.e: Delonix regia, Cassia fistula, Ipomoea pes-caprae,Allamanda cathartica, Catharanthus roseus, Nerium oleander, Bougainvillea glabra ,Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Cordia sebestena,  and Echinopsis lageniformis. Some of depicted species are  declared as a national flower of their country.

Delonix regia is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It is grown as an ornamental tree and in English it is given the name Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant. In addition to its ornamental value, it is also a useful shade tree in tropical conditions, because it usually grows to a modest height but spreads widely, and its dense foliage provides full shade.

The Royal Poinciana is found in Madagascar's Madagascar dry deciduous forests. In the wild it is endangered, but it is widely cultivated elsewhere.The flowers are large, with four spreading scarlet or orange-red petals up to 8 cm long, and a fifth upright petal called the standard, which is slightly larger and spotted with yellow and white.

Summer flowers

Summer flowers have very rich of color ( reds, blues, violets, oranges, yellows, pinks, purple and whites ) and beautiful. The beginning of summer starts out with perennial flowers that began to grow late in spring.Some popular perennials for early summer are Irises and Peonies.

As summer starts to really heat up, there are many flowers that cannot continue to grow in the hottest days of summer. Unfortunately there are not too many colorful plants that can last in the heat. Some good annuals to plant in the hot days of summer are Cosmos and zinnias.The important things are giving them the proper care in order to have surviving plants.

Rose on Thailand’s Stamp - 2010

The Communications Authority of Thailand issued  stamp  features  rose flower on February 5, 2010. The issue stamp only one postage stamp which depicts a red rose . A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of erect shrubs, and climbing or trailing plants, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles.

The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, which usually has only four. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red.Roses are insect-pollinated in nature.

While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called "thorns", they are technically prickles — outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem).Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it.

Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and fragrance. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.

Creeper's flowers of Vietnam

 

On 1st August 2006, the Vietnam’s  Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) issued the stamp series  "Creeper’s flowers" consisting of 4 values which  depicts Momordica blossom , Fragrant cynanthe flower , Bitter melon blossom, Fiber melon blossom 

 

The stamps are featured in a lively and realistic style that highlights the beauty of these flowers. These are 4 familiar species which are grown on trellis for decoration. Its fruits are also used as good foods and medicament. They are very common and can be seen anywhere throughout Việt Nam

Fairy Lily of Vietnam

 

Fairy lily are petite members of the amaryllis family.It is useful as a border plant in front of the shrubberies and can decorate windows when in shallow pots or bowls.

The Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications issued the stamp series  "Fairy Lily“  consisting of 2 values with the denominations of 3,500 đ and 10,500 đ, on the 30th of July 2010, The stamp set shown two petite members of Fairy Lily in Vietnam, Pink Fairy Lily (Zephyranthes carinata Herb) and Yellow Fairy Lily (Zephyranthes ajax Hort).

Zephyranthes carinata, commonly known as the rosepink zephyr lily or pink rain lily, is a perennial flowering plant native to Central America. They have with large bright pink flowers, around 10 cm , and green strap-like leaves. They are found naturally in moist, open areas, often near woodlands.The flowers develop into more or less spherical or three-lobed capsules. The seeds are shiny black and flattened.The funnel-shaped flowers are solitary, with pink to rose red perianths.

Blooms - Australian Cultivars

 

Cultivar is  a cultivated variety developed by selectively breeding in order to enhance or minimise traits common to other members of its species. Today’s gardeners owe much of their success to the availability of Australian cultivars. When selecting plants, modern gardeners look for more than just beauty. They demand plants that are hearty, disease resistant and easy to grow, no matter what colour their thumb. 

Five Australian flower cultivars are featured in this special issue of five stamps.The stamps feature Simon Griffiths’ superb photographs of the five cultivars. Each of the cultivars was photographed at the peak of its blooming period.

The cultivars in the stamp issue were specifically bred to produce spectacular blooms on hardy, disease resistant plants suitable for home cultivation. All are entirely Australian bred, and are widely available through commercial nurseries. Three of the featured Australian cultivars are from introduced species, the remaining two are natives.

  Hari Withers’ camellia:

The ethereal ‘Hari Withers’ camellia was bred by Dr R M Withers of Victoria and named in honour of his wife. Flowers average nine cm in diameter and appear mid-season on a fastgrowing, upright and spreading plant.

Described as formal double in style, they are very pale pink gradating to a deeper pink rosebud at the centre. ‘Hari Withers’ was registered in 1985 and is a Camellia x williamsii hybrid.

Flowers of Azerbayjan–Definitive stamps 2011

In year 2011, Azerbayjan Post issued the definitive stamp features rare and endemic flower in  Azerbayjan, such as Gagea Alekxeenkoana, Centaurea ficher, Ophrys causcasica, and Galanthus causcasius.

Gagea Alekxeenkoana is a flowering plant in the genus Gagea of the family Liliaceae.The plant is found mainly in the Mediterranean region and central Europe.It is a less vigorous plant, growing to a height of 2–6 cm and normally having just a single pair of twisting, thread-like basal leaves, with one or two pairs of laneolate leaves, perhaps 1 cm wide, just below the flowers.

The flowers, of which there are usually no more than four on each plant, are yellow and have six petals; they are about 1½ cm in diameter. It grows mainly on dry grassland.

Centaourea Ficher is a critically endangered endemic species, which grows on  limited area around Golbasi district of Ankara province. It has attractive pink, red, purple flowers, the colours of which change with maturation. It has a high potential as out door ornamental plant and as cut flower. Its natural habitat is continuously on decrease because of uncontrolled plucking, intense construction activities and urbanization.

The most important reason why the generation of the species is endangered is strong anthropogenic pressure. Therefore, the protection of this plant is of great importance.

Ophrys caucasica is endemic species of the Caucasus and rare species. Its habitat in between rocks on the middle mountainous zone, on grass growing slopes and bushes.propagated by seeds and in a vegetative way.This species should be reserve because collection of flowers, change of the habitat due to the use of the area for economic purposes.Now it has been cultivating  in the Botanic Garden of the Institute of Botany of Azerbaijan .

Galanthus Caucasicus grows to a height of 0.15m and 0.08m in width. It has tapering foliage that is blue/green. It produces flowers during autumn/winter that are bell-shaped and white and green in colour. This plant is a deciduous bulb originating. from Turkey. Nodding white flowers with a green mark at the tip of each inner petal.

Clematis Flower of Guernsey

In 1985 Raymond Evison OBE, VMH, founded the Guernsey Clematis Nursery. The nursery has grown rapidly in recent years and is now the leading producer of young clematis plants in the world.

Clematis now follows behind other crops that have upheld the tradition in horticulture on the island of Guernsey. The clematis featured in this Guernsey stamps have all been bred or developed in Guernsey by Raymond Evison.

Rosemoor Evipo002 has distinctive reddish purple flowers with contrasting yellow anthers. The large flowers are borne from May to September and it is an ideal plant for growing with other wall trained trees and shrubs.

Blue Moon Evirin launched at the 1997 Chelsea Flower Show in conjunction with EMI, the record label company. Marvellous wavy edges to the whitish/blue sepals.

Wisley Evipo001 is a modern day jackmanii type named after the RHS famous garden. It produces a mass of bluish medium sized flowers. Outstanding for growing with roses.

Arctic Queen Evitwo is remarkable free flowering white double clematis flowering for most of the summer months .It produces a stunning plant when in flower, grown in a container or through an evergreen wall trained shrub

Harlow Carr Evipo004 named after the RHS northern-most garden is extremely free flowering from early summer onwards. The  produced four sepal, each width of 3”,  deep purple en-mass making it ideal for growing with roses or ground cover.

Liberation Evifive named in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Channel Islands from wartime occupation. This clematis has dramatic deep pink reddish large flowers.

Royal Velvet Evifour has deep purple flowers born in abundance during late spring early summer. An ideal container plant or for growing with grey foliage shrubs.

Guernsey Cream, raised from the species clematis patens from China, is very free flowering in the late spring early summer and is very winter hardy. Fully rounded cream flowers.

Josephine Evijohill discovered by Josephine Hill in England and developed in Guernsey has remarkable full double pinkish mauve flowers. A great plant for growing in a container.

Hyde Hall Evipo009 selected for its compact early summer free flowering habit. A superb plant for the patio or the small town garden. Large white flowers suffused with pink with occasion green highlights.
