Frogs of Malaysia


Malay Post  has issued regularly the stamp set features of Malayan fauna. On May 3, 2007, they issued  three postage stamps and one souvenir sheet stamp. The Malayan frog depicted  are Kodok Pokok,  Katak Perang, and Katak Tanduk on single stamps and Katak Paya on souvenir sheet stamp.



The souvenir sheet consist of one postage stamp depicts Katak paya (Rana laterimaculata) and have background of another species of frog,  Katak Pokok Terbang Wallace or Wallace's flying frog (Rhacophorus nigroplamatus).

Katak paya (Rana laterimaculata) is a species of frog in the Ranidae family and found in Indonesia,Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical swamps, rivers, swamps, rural gardens, and heavily degraded former forest. Katak paya (Rana laterimaculata) is threatened by habitat loss.


Wallace's flying frog (Rhacophorus nigropalmatus),  is a moss frog found at least from to Malay Peninsula into western Indonesia. It is named for the biologist, Alfred R. Wallace, who collected the first specimen to be formally identified.

Wallace's flying frog is quite photogenic, due to its large size, brilliant colors, and interesting behavior.With a body length of 80-100 mm (males are smaller than females), it is one of the largest species of Rhacophorus. Its eyes and eardrums are large, its limbs are very long, and its fingers and toes are webbed right to the tips.




Kodok Pokok ( Pedostibes bosii) is a species of toad in the Bufonidae family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia,Malaysia, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and rivers. It is threatened by habitat loss.











Katak perang ( Nyctixalus pictus) is a species of frog in the Rhacophoridae family. It is found in Brunei,Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.











Katak tanduk, or the Long-nosed Horned Frog (Megophrys nasuta), is a species of frog restricted to the rainforest areas of southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo.

Katak tanduk lives in permanently damp and cool lowland and sub-montane rainforests among leaf litter. Katak tanduk typically feed on spiders, small rodents, lizards and other frogs.



Katak tanduk is a large frog ranging from 100-120 mm in length. They are light to dark brown on the dorsal surface with varying patterns and camouflage very well with the forest floor. The throat is black-dark brown and diffuses into cream-yellow halfway along the ventral surface. The upper eyelids and snout are drawn out into long triangular projections, forming what looks like "horns", giving them their common name.
